De Profundis

De Profundis, taken from the Book of Psalms, is deeply rooted in Christian musical tradition. Stefan Wesołowski juxtaposes philharmonic instruments (harp, timpani) with the electronically processed crackling of white noise to achieve a mysterious music that is light and airy like Gothic stained glass. The “depths” evoked in the title are a metaphor for living with a curse, in constant danger of sinking, helpless and unable to breathe.

Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord;
O Lord, hear my voice.
Let your ears be attentive
to my cry for mercy!
